I will be working on a page, like this one and before I can finish the page automatically reverts to the previous page. Then I have to rederict back to my page I am working on and start all over.

Enter about:config into the location bar, click through any warning, then into the Filter box paste:

browser.backspace_action

Double-click the line listing that preference to change the value to 2

I am also having this problem using Firefox 5.0.1 for Mac OS X.

It is very annoying when working on a secure page. Have stopped using FIREFOX when accessing certain web sites when entering sensitive information.
