"privacy" option is set to "use custom settings for history" and "save history for 30 days but history is not being saved. all other preferences ok. i do nmot have a user.js file.
all other prefences (e.g., bookmarks) work as set. history setting used to work. misfunction may be coincident with upgrade to 3.6.12 - not sure.
following advice in forum, i looked for user.js file in mozilla/firefox/profiles/q62xb36c.default to edit user.js file but file does not exist. desktop search using firefox did not find a user.js file anywhere on mt system,

The pref browser.history_expire_days_min is set to 40, so you keep history for 40 days.
What is the value of the pref browser.history_expire_days on the about:config page?
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/about%3Aconfig
Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode
Cleanup software like CCleaner also can remove data like the Firefox Browsing History.
So if you use such software then check the settings for the Firefox application.
here are all the browser.history entries in about:config
browser.history.showSessions default boolean false
browser.history_expire_days default integer 180
browser.history_expire_days.mirror userset integer 180
browser.history_expire_days_min userset integer 40
browser.history_expire_sites default integer 40000
i use uniblue but, while browsing and checking history, there are no entries of current use. uniblue runs only when i tell it to.
just discovered that I can't save bookmarks either. "bookmark this page" saves nothing.
i have a better general description of my problem since i just discovered cookie preferences don't work:
Setting "privacy" to "use custom settings for history" has no efffect. default of "never remember history" appears to be unaffected although "se custom settings for history" is displayed. Have tried reinstalling 3.6.12 - no change.
