Across from the URL, how do I get search engines to work?

On the top toolbar line across from URL - the search engines, Google, Yahoo, e bay, etc never worked from the time I downloaded Firefox. I looked through Options, help, etc and couldn't find an answer.

Please help - I am a beginner at this stuff and sure hate to re-download Firefox and import all my favorites, which I needed my neighbor to help in the first place. Retired, thanks.

When you type a search term in the Search bar and either hit the magnifier icon or hit Enter, what happens?

Question:When you type a search term in the Search bar and either hit the magnifier icon or hit Enter, what happens?

Answer: Absolutely nothing. it's as if Firefox is frozen. Yet when I go to Google in my Favorites and type in a request, it works prefect.
