Deos the current version of FF have the ability to generate a drop down selection from the tool bar? It's starting to look pretty crowded and I'd like to be able to group together common themes in terms of web sites

There is specifically a bookmarks toolbar visible from View -> Toolbars -> Bookmarks toolbars.

The toolbar contains some default items, you may move them elsewhere if more convenient. Bookmarks may be added singly or in folders. I often add folders that contain yet another level of folders. See Use bookmark folders to organize your bookmarks

Note the bookmarks menu itself will also expand and again folders may be nested within folders, and bookmarks may also be viewed from a sidebar.

There are many add-ons available to regarding bookmark use and you may be interested to know that some changes have been made to how firefox4 will handle, and synchronise, bookmarks, you can try that out now if you wish, and it probably will not be long before it is released as a replacement for firefox 3.6 see http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/features/

(If you do try firefox 4 it will not overwrite your existing installation or your existing bookmarks, but you should ensure you give it its own profile, which is easily done see Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles)
