In my company we have local site like this "site/home" but firefox adds www and com to be come "www.site.com/home" and the site so it doesn't work, this is when I select "Use system proxy setting". When I select "Auto detect..." or "No proxy" the local site works fine but any www site doesn't work. Finally, when I choose manual and add the no proxy exceptions it become like "Use system proxy setting".

Note it works very well in the IE. this is the exceptions(with modified names): site1*;site2*;172.16.*;10.*;http://site3*;*.local;http://site4.sss.ins*;*.sss.ins;http://site5*;*. sss.org.uk*;webmail.sss.*;owa.sss.*;;*.site6.com;*.site7.com

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
