The mall grid button in the upper-right corner of the page that toggles the images on and off in a new tab is missing how do I get it back?

I had a problem with some malware/adware by the time I got it removed it had altered much of Firefox.

I have managed to correct everything apart from the thumb nails of frequently used sites on a new tab. I know there should be a 3 x 3 grid in the top right corner but it doesn't show. How do I get it back, please?

Chosen solution

You can reset the browser.newtab.url via the right-click context menu to the default value (about:newtab) to get the new tab page with the thumbnails.

Just to clarify it was resetting the browser.newtab.url which corrected the problem. Many many thanks!
