You can experiment with code like this in the userChrome.css file.

#personal-bookmarks .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-text {color:#000!important; background-color:-moz-dialog!important}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.
