I tried to create an email address with thunderbird, could not set up an email address without Gandi. So I made an email address and paid for my name and nothing in my mail works. I have thunderbird at work and it does not go through gandi. Not impressed with it, and have no idea how to set up a regular thunderbird account properly.

There is no need to buy ghandi if you have an existing email account. You use the Existing Mail Account choice when setting Thunderbird up.

You do know that Thunderbird is not an email provider and does not issue email accounts. You need to have a working email account with a provider. There are several free providers like Gmail and Yahoo that you can use.
