I am planning to move 2 websites I manage to Weebly from Homestead. I use Firefox daily and it is my preferred browser. When I open the Weebly editor, some of the screen images don't display correctly. I have been told by Weebly that this is an issue with 1) Adobe Flash Player or 2) my security software or 3) a conflict between plugins. I use Norton for security.

I cannot figure out the source of my problem. Editor text of words like "text" or "image" show up as little symbols in a box. In other places, links to pages like "change theme" show up as words in oversized fonts.

I don't know enough about add-ons or plugins to determine the source of my editor display issues and I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Please try the Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox SafeMode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

I tried most of the steps above yesterday, to no avail.

Having said that, I think I found the source of my problem and just need to test it. I have been fiddling with Weebly at work on my lunch break on my laptop. And using my employer's WIFI. I believe the WIFI security settings are my issue. I will take my laptop home this weekend, try it using my home WIFI and see if I have the same display problems. I'm not sure why this did not occur to me before. I use Norton security software. But I know there are in-house security settings related to the WIFI I use...

My issue is tied to the WIFI I was using at my office. The security settings are such that I cannot load the editor completely. I knew that some sites were blocked and I could not do Youtube downloads. I did not know Weebly was blocked in some way.

So - if you are doing Weebly and the editor won't load, your issue could be related to your WIFI settings if you are are using an employer's connection.

Missing icons are likely supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you might see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters instead. If you have a font installed that covers this Unicode range then you may see a real (CJK) character and not the little box with the CSS code.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value to true).

You can check the Net log and the Network log in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see if content fails to load or possibly is blocked (file size is zero).

Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.
