when I click on a download, such as a pdf file on a website, the download window in firefox opens and I have to save it to a folder in order to download it. how can i simply have firefox open the file without having to save it?

Do you just want to use the built-in PDF viewer, or do you want to adjust the download action also for other files?

If other you want to decide about other files behavior too, please see Applications panel - Set how Firefox handles different types of files.
