I just updated to the latest version of Firefox and the bookmarks have disappeared. When i research a solution, it tells me to hit the star on the toolbar. There's no star on the toolbar!!.

The attached screenshot shows the standard toolbar buttons. Can you see those?

If the problem is that your Bookmarks Toolbar is not displayed, you can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and turn it back on:

To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list.

Hey there, sorry to hear your bookmarks button has gone AWOL!

So are you on Firefox 45.0.2 now? Your details say 44.0. To check, use these instructions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/find-what-version-firefox-you-are-using. Your Java is also out of date, so I suggest swinging by https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ to verify your plugins.

If you need to, you can update manually from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ if the automatic updates are having trouble.

Extensions and Themes should update automatically, but you can go to about:addons, select the appropriate tab and click on the gear icon to Check for Updates manually.

If you're up to date on Firefox and all its add-ons and the Bookmarks button is still gone, you can customise the toolbars in Firefox manually: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-firefox-controls-buttons-and-toolbars. It's basically right-click on toolbar, select Customise and then drag and drop.

Depending on what version you updated from, there might have been a change in how the bookmark button is present. I recall it changing from menu+toolbar to menu/toolbar (i.e. from two buttons to one).

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
  • View > Toolbars
You can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.
