While browsing, a website popped up called helpfoxpro, and it wouldn't let me close it unless I open the task manager and close the browser

Like the topic says, what was it? It was requiring a username and password from me. I didn't input anything but it was weird that it popped up and wouldn't let me close like any other normal popup.

That is a locking ad page.

A way out of the trap is to (force it if needed) Close Firefox. Wait about 20 seconds for Firefox to finish closing. Right-click on the Firefox icon and select Open New Window. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sometimes this works. If it opens, close it by Menu > File > Exit. This will flush out that web page from the Session Store.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.

In addition to the above (if it applies to your case) :

When you get a scam page that shows a two-line 'Authentication Required' dialog, and you cancel it, usually the page will reload and show it again. To break the cycle : Tap the Esc key several times in a row quickly - that should cancel the dialog as well as the reload. Then you can easily close the tab.

And a pop-up blocker, like FredMcD suggested :
