Does this still happen when you are running Firefox in Safe Mode? It could be an extension that's slowing down Firefox.

Another page I'd recommend checking out is the Firefox uses too much memory or CPU resources - How to fix page to see if any of the things listed there helps to improve the performance of Firefox.
