How does sender know I do not use HTML when "Allow remote content" is off

more options

I get dozens of emails stating, "It looks like you're using plain-text email" or something to that effect. I see this message when I merely highlight the email in the list but without opening the email by clicking on the list entry. "Allow remote content" is set to off.

How do they know?

Thanks.

I think that is generated by javascript that is embedded into the message. It is not a message being inserted in real time (although it does appear that way).
