I have Firefox 3.6.13 on an IBM Thinkpad with XP. Just yesterday I the Firefox back arrow and forward arrow don't light-up and they do not work. I can right click the pull-down arrow next to the forward button and see a list and choose a previous page to go back to. I uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it, but did not solve the problem.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Thanks, this solved my problem.

Tried several of the solutions (places-sql, localstore.rdf) suggested. Didn't work.

I did notice that the problem only occurs when a page is initially loaded, whether the home page or new tab page. If I navigate away from either of these, I can go back to any other subsequent pages, but not the original that I navigated away from.
