How do I clear out the old programs in the Add-On box?

I have some old Java Console programs (6.0.20 6.0.21 6.0.22) that still reside in my Add-Ons box. I have not been able to get them to delete or clear out.

I may have to uninstall Firefox and lose all my settings in order to get the Add-Ons box to drop those old entries. At least, I suppose that would work.

My question is: Is there a way to clear out the Add-Ons box without having to uninstall Firefox?

Those must be manually removed, since Java did not remove them when updating. See:

Thanks. Your solution worked! Also thanks for the updates pages. I was behind but I thought those things had automatic notices that they sent me.

Thanks for the reply. I cannot access the Java Control Panel mentioned in the article. I use Vista. The article sounds as if it is talking about XP.

In any case, everytime I try to pull up the Java Control Panel, I get an instantaneous flash of the Command Prompt box, then it disappears. There is some writing in the Command Prompt box but I only see the box for literally half a second before it disappears, then I get nothing else. What causes this disappearing act and how do I stop it?

and

How do I access the Java Control Panel? Thanks.

I also found this solution worked just fine for me !! Went to the _java_console_extensions , and removed all except the latest _24 update. Would be nice if a little housekeeping was done when a new version or update is installed.

Sorry, I over-looked the e-mail notification from 3 weeks ago.
At the top of the link, it says:

This article applies to:

  • Platform(s): Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 2003

catraveler

That is the fault of the developers of Java and their sloppy update routine; Oracle (formerly Sun).

No problem on forgetting. I still have not resolved the issue. I still cannot access Java Control Panel. It still acts like it did before. (See my previous posting.)

Can anyone tell me how to get to Java Control Panel?

Inspector86:

In the article that I posted above on the Java site ( http://www.java.com/en/download/help/java_update.xml ), at the top of the page it says:

  • This article applies to:
    • Platform(s): Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 2003

The instructions for opening the Java Control Panel are in III (Roman numeral 3) on that page.

I do not know how you are trying to access Java Control Panel that gives you a flash of the Command Prompt box as that should not be a part of the procedure.

OK, that got me in! I pulled up the Java Control Panel. I can now work with it.

Now, what I was doing before was hitting Start, then typing in Java Control Panel, and up pops Java Control Panel in the blue lettered Programs window about 3" above where I typed it in.

Then I clicked on it and what I described is what happens. It still happens that way even now. What quirk do I have with my system? This Searching method I use usually works. Say I want to find the downloads folder. I type in downloads, it appears above, I click on it, it opens.

Why won't Java Control Panel open the same way?

Thanks for getting it open for me.

I have never used Windows Vista and I am not clear about how you are trying to access the Java Control Panel with "...hitting Start, then typing in Java Control Panel, and up pops Java Control Panel in the blue lettered Programs window about 3" above where I typed it in."

Ways to access it:

  • as outlined in the article above: Start > Settings > Control Panel Java
  • Start > Run, enter javacpl.cpl in the Run box and click OK
  • you can create a shortcut by going to C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin, then right-click on javacpl.exe, Create Shortcut. When the shortcut is created, you can drag it to your desktop or your quick launch bar next to the Start button. That will work until the next major version of Java is released (presumably will be jre7 and probably will be in a different sub-folder).

Other than the above, I can offer no further suggestions.

No problem. I guess you would have to see Vista to know what I was talking about.

Nonetheless, your way worked so I can get to Java Console that way.
