the page back button only goes back one page whereas the old FF allowed you to jump back several pages, has this functionality gone?
The back and forward button now only takes you back one page at a time whereas in FF3 you could jump back several pages. Has this functionality been removed? That was one of the best features of FF and dreadful if it has gone. It was of the main reasons why I use FF

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-manager/ This add-on solved the problem for me. Now if only there is an addon for the saving tabs and windows. Why should we have to screw around with this when the old firefox automatically did this for us?
Thanks but that add-on doesn't resolve this issue. In FF3 if you clicked to the side of the back button it would let you pick which page you wanted to go back to rather than just having to go back one page at a time
I found a suitable add-on which solves the problem

I had this same problem when I upgraded from 3.6 to 8.01. The solution for me was about:config>browser.sessionhistory.max_entries and change the setting from 2 to 50. Don't know if this will help but it fixed my issue.
The arrow to open the tab history of the Back and Forward buttons has been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
Use one of these methods to open the tab history list:
- Right click on the Back or Forward button
- Hold down the left mouse button on the enabled Back or Forward button until the list opens
You can look at this extension:
