First I was getting server error from Yahoo (a Yahoo issue), then once that went away, I could no longer send email from Yahoo, and most of the time, unable to open any email as well. After spending over an hour in chat mode with a Yahoo techie, the problems in IE and Chrome were resolved, but persisted with Firefox. Our actions were as follows in all three browsers on a wireless bb connection a) cleared all cache and browsing history, b) signed out c) signed in. After that the only browser with continued issues was Firefox. Also, I seem to be stuck in Yahoo beta email, meaning I cannot back up to former, simpler, dial-up friendly versions of Yahoo email. I am really losing my faith in Yahoo, and now I know probable cause: they were taken over by AT&T.

Try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

Thanks for the safe mode start tip. I tried that and now Yahoo outgoing email is working. I then restarted in normal mode and Yahoo outgoing email is working. I then decided to see what plugins I had and saw one that was disabled (Microsoft DRM 9.0.0.4503). I looked that up to see why and was surprised to find that at one point, MS deemed it necessary, without my knowledge or permission, to install this plugin that helps Firefox to work on sites using .net framework (Microsoft sites, mostly). This plugin unfortunately has become mall-ware. Then I saw some posts about not being able to remove it from the computer (though it is disabled in Firefox). So this has been a very enlightening trip through troubleshooting land. Here are some of the links I found most interesting in my search:

http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/blocklist/ (triggered when you click the MORE link associated with disabled plugin on the URL above) http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1542495 http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=1064265 http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showtopic=9396 (use the advice on this site with caution, back up any files you remove)

I have not tried any of these tips yet, though what is documented may explain the irrational behavior of my little vintage 2002 Dell laptop.

Thanks again!
