At the right of the last tab, there was a cross (x). If I wanted a new web site opened while keeping the one I was in, I clicked on this and it opened a new page and I could go to other sites of my choice. The cross is no longer there, and I cannot find out how to open a new tab, and go to a new web site.

You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button that shows as a plus sign (+) from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions.
If you can't find the New Tab button then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible space to the left of it.

Thank you. Problem solved

This problem is not solved. In previous (e.g. V3) versions it was possible to have a new tab button at the top left hand corner of the toolbar AND a second one at the far right hand end of all the tabs. Now, as far as I can see, it is either/or - only one is possible. I have the one at the top left hand corner and so when I go to customise the toolbar there is NO "new tab" button for me to drag to the toolbar. Please can we revert to the previous ability to have more than one new tab' button in different places.
