Matt... could you recommend an anti virus you like that works well with Mozilla products ? thanks

Not really.

But the reality is that email scanning is really not necessary. Either incoming or outgoing. If you want something compatible, just get a basic anti virus and not an internet security suite.

Avast has some quirks I find distasteful, not the least of which is it want to be added to the chain of trust for encrypted browsing in the same say proper certifying authorities are. But they want you to add them so they do not need to have their security and processes audited as the real authorities do. Avast is not the only one to do this, but I find it problematic as you are placing all of your trust in the anti virus program vendor and their integrity. You are also inserting what is a weak link in the chain of trust. I doubt the NSA will have trouble getting avast to hand over the encryption keys so they can snoop.

Products with a firewall will help if you have an infection that is connecting outwards, but really the anti virus should be identifying the program as a threat, but blocking it because it has not got it in that version in it's database.

Personally I use NOD32, but it is not performing in anti virus tests as well as it once was. But it does appear to work for me.

Basically you need to make an informed decision. Look at results of performance tests, read the information we have on the wiki about different products. Examine how much they slow down your computer. I read recently that some anti virus basically reduce the speed of a computer by uo to 40%. Draw your own conclusions. Personally I hate Nortons, but we have support folk here that use it quite happily, they are happy to fiddle with it's firewall component every time Thunderbird updates, so it causes them no issues because they know how to fix those password errors.

In the end the more bells and whistles a product has, the more things there are to go wrong. Packages with anti phishing, anti scam, anti spam, anti virus, firewall etc have a huge footprint to mess up in. Then they update the products every day or in some cases every few hours. It is no wonder their are false positives, incorrect blocking etc.

What anti virus are you using? Does it respond better if you disable email scanning?

Avast Internet Security, been using for about 1 yr, it made no difference to shut it off. thanks

Why is it every time I read avast I get shivers up my spine.

Perhaps this has something to do with it. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#AVAST

I suggest you try safe mode. To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Matt... thanks for your help ! I followed the instructions for "Hangs with" and Thunderbird worked fine. To double check I turned avast mail shield back on and in options in Thunderbird I re selected "allow antivirus to.... " . I restarted computer and Thunderbird is still working as it should.  ??? Will see how it goes the next few days. Thanks again for your help.
