Could Thunderbird please do its compacting in the background?

I often wake up my machine and immediately click "get messages" to see what's new. Often when I do this my request is blocked because the trash or some other folder is being compacted. This is annoying.

Why must tbird choose to compact just when I am trying to do something? Couldn't it do compaction and other such housekeeping in the background, when it would otherwise be idle?

You could take ownership of this by ticking the box to ask permission prior to compacting.

I didn't know about that option. But I think that would be just as annoying.

It seems like it would be straightforward to defer housekeeping to a time when thunderbird no longer has focus. Or else, go ahead and start compaction as now, but then abandon it if the user does something that will conflict.
