If Firefox updates automatically (good), why do I get a pop up window telling me an update 10.0.1 is available--is ithe "Update Firefox" button legit?

I have had some possibly destructive pop up windows with links so am cautious with them--I usually delete them. Now, I have a Mozilla or Firefox "Software Update" pop up window that says, "Update Available" "A security and stability update for Firefox is available: Firefox 10.0.1 It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible." There are three options: "View more information about this update" (hot link) or "Ask Later" (button) or "Update Firefox" (button). Is this safe? I want to always update and thought it happened automatically, so maybe this is potentially dangerous links? If it is automatically updated, then why the pop up window? I can't figure out how to go to a website and initiate an update (I have 9.0.1. Please advise about the legitimacy of the pop up when it should happen automatically. thanks.

Yes, that pop-up is legitimate in this case.
A Firefox update to 10.0.1 has been released to repair a bug and a security problem.

Best is to use Help > About Firefox to update or install a full version from the Mozilla server.

Thanks for the reply and info/website. I'll try it.

When I go to Help>About, "update" is not one of my options. I'm on dial up, so I do not want to re-install anything, but just updating is often not a problem.
