I have followed the steps to speed up Firefox, yet it continues to run slowly. Can I have the old Firefox back? The one I never had trouble with?
When using Outlook, there are long pauses between actions, sometimes taking minutes to switch emails, delete or move them. Videos load slowly, sometimes hesitating or freezing. Scrolling Facebook and other web pages frequently stutters, hesitates, often taking between one and five minutes between movements. Simply typing this took nearly ten minutes, as it froze, hitched, and stuttered. No error messages have been seen.

If not already there how about trying to update to 57.0.2 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1194344 as there was a fix involved.
See if fix worked : Go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Help ? --> Troubleshooting Information Page and take a look in the Accessibility section if accessibility is set to "true" there. if yes, go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser. Restart Firefox
If still issues : You could try this please : Go the 3 Bar Menu then Options --> Performance and untick everything. Change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 0 = No Multi-processor = slow again. TRY 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please.
Each Extension you have installed give or take 20megs each.

Going back : unfortunately 56.0.2 and below is no longer safe to use for every day use do to security issues, but 52.5.0 ESR is secure. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.
You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
