I access my health centre website with a personal digital certificate issued by my local authority. I have been using Vivaldi browser with no problems, as soon as I click 'use Digital Certificate' a box pops up giving me the option to choose my certificate and it enters the site from there. I have just installed FF 58. When I go through the same procedure no box pops up and eventually the website tells me there is no digital certificate to use for that site. I guess FF is not seeing the cert? What should I do to solve this?

Hi rafikiphoto, hmm, I don't think it comes with Windows, you would have gotten it from your health centre by some method, such as downloading from their site. Any idea where it might be saved?

Perhaps one option is to export the certificate from Internet Explorer. If you open "Internet Options" (from within IE or the Windows Control Panel), Content tab, Certificates button, Personal certificates tab, do you see your certificate there? Try to select that, click Export, then Next, and see if you can export it using the pfx format. I think that's the one Firefox wants to import into the "Your Certificates" tab.

Have you ever imported the certificate to Firefox before? Firefox uses a separate certificate store from Windows, so that probably is a necessary step.

I can't find the support article on this, but I think you would do it as follows:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box above the General heading, type cert and after Firefox filters the page, click the "View Certificates" button.

In this dialog, click the Your Certificates "tab" and then you can use the Import button.

Does that work?

Thanks very much. I am traveling at the moment so I will work on this as soon as I return home.

Hi. I am home. I am looking at the Import now. Trouble is I don't know where to find the certs to point FF to. Where are they usually located in Windows 10?

Thanks. Yes, I have the cert from our local authority. I went, as suggested, to IE and exported the cert and imported it to FF. All done now and working. Thanks again.
