Hello Iggy490, That should be a Crash Reporter dialog opening. The Crash Report can be useful here to help figure out why Firefox is crashing and to help developers create a fix to prevent future crashes. See this article: Mozilla Crash Reporter

Hi Iggy490, to get a fuller picture:

  • Does the problem occurs only with external links and shortcuts, not links in pages you are viewing in Firefox?
  • Does Firefox start and run normally from its own shortcut?
  • Does it make any difference if Firefox is already running when you use an external link or shortcut?

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Copy the most recent 5-7 File Names in the folder. Post the information in the reply box.

Hi All, Thanks for taking an interest. @JSCHER2000 - hyperlinks not within Firefox seem to create the issue. Hyperlinks within Firefox seem to work. @FredMcD here are the file names of the failure reports. Looking at the details (and it does not mean much to me!) I did note that the Crash Reason was listed as EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ Does this assist? I have Avast (not the free one) and Malware Bytes running. I have temporarily changed the default browser to Edge, but prefer Firefox and have used it for many years.

Hi, thanks for the crash reports. Try disabling or updating Malwarebytes.

Note that having Avast and Mb running at the same time may cause a conflict, although it should be OK if one of them is only used for a manual scan.

@ Scribe and FredMcD. Thanks for your suggestions. FYI I have been running Avast and MalwareBytes simultaneously for some time (years) - originally on Windows 7 and latterly on Windows 10 (about 6 - 8 weeks on Windows 10). The problem did not start with the migration to Windows 10 and I do not recall adding any specific programs immediately prior to this problem arising.

Hi Iggy490, your crash reports say they occurred in Firefox 61.0.1 instead of the current version, Firefox 67.

Note: If you run Microsoft Office, change your default browser to something other than Firefox before deleting any Firefox folders because otherwise Office may become unable to open links.

Could you check whether you have multiple installations? If Firefox 61 wasn't crashing, it would be easier to figure out where it is running from. Usually Firefox would be installed in one of these locations. Do you have Firefox in both?

  • "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox"

The crash reports also aren't recent (CrashTime : Jun 16, 2019). Aren't there recent crash reports?

If a line on the about:crashes page doesn't start with "bp-" then you can click this line to submit the crash report. The link will be updated and gets a "bp-" prefix if the report is submitted successfully.

You v=can also check the Windows Event log to see if there are details available.

Hi guys. I did what I suppose I should have done in the first place and uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. It seems to work correctly now. @JSCher2000. I checked after reinstallation, there is a firefox folder in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) has Mozilla Maintenance Service, but no other that I can see. Sorry, did not see your post until after reinstallation.
