Under tools, options, privacy, I changed the history to use custom settings, but the option to clear cookies when Firefox closes is greyed out and not usable.

Hello,

You have to enable the option " Clear History when Firefox Closes" Then click the "Settings" Button.

Now you can select the option you want.

Further information can be found in the How to clear Firefox cache article here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-clear-firefox-cache
