I've been receiving messages to update outdated software. Is this being sent by firefox? there are too many viruses out there for me to install update unless I'm sure was sent by Firefox.

Yes, Mozilla recently started sending out a hotfix upgrading all users from Firefox 10 and above to the most recent one. Here's the recent post about it from Tyler Downer, User Advocacy Project Manger at Mozilla
