Profile files and folders are too large - how to move contents to other files/folders?

I have a large inbox and have moved all the contents in Thunderbird to a new folder I have created under local folders. When I go to my windows file system and look in the profile folder I find that the INBOX file/folder is still MASSIVE, even though I have moved ALL the contents to a completely new folder inside Thunderbird.

Why is this? And how can I move all my old emails to a different folder inside Thunderbird such that the windows file explorer shows the original inbox file/folder to now be small, with the new file/folder being big???

Any help or tips very appreciated....

Rgds, Dave.

Chosen solution

Right click on the Inbox in Thunderbird in the folder pane and select Compact... Messages aren't physically removed from the folder until you do that.
