I have followed the recommended procedure for recovering bookmarks from backup. I can see the list of dated backups and can select one. I then get the response "Unable to process the backup file." I am using version 39.0

Try to remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup (bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item-count>_<hash>.json) in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Are that compressed .jsonlz4 backups or normal or manually created .json backups?

Were these JSON backups created with the same Firefox version?

Make sure that the files are actually JSON backups and have the correct .json or .jsonlz4 file extension.
