Firefox crashing after Windows 10 upgrade

Just upgraded to Windows 10. Clicked on Firefox browser on my desktop and once it loads, it crashes. I'll have about a second to click on a new tab after the homepage loads, and then it closes. Leaving me with aggravation and a pop up window on my screen asking if I'd like to restart or quite Firefox after sending in my crash report. I have tried to reopen the browser more than once, and every time it would do the same thing. Crash and then restart or quit.

I'm not sure why this keeps occurring but I would like to find a solution. Firefox is the only browser I feel safe using, yet at the moment I am on Chrome...which is working just fine. Is this a problem that would need me to revert back to Windows 8? I'm hoping not.

Sorry to hear about the crashes. Are you getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter dialog, or the Windows crash dialog? Upon a second reading, I see that you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter. If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution.

Please check the last section of the support article "Firefox Crashes" for steps to get the crash report IDs that allow us to view your crash reports, and then post some of the recent ones here.

Also and/or meanwhile, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any less crashy?

I tried the suggestions but neither worked! It still crashed once again. I don't want to have to continue to start up in safe mode every time! Is there a way to just revert back to windows 8?

I'm not sure anyone should revert to Windows 8, but I think another user posted here who tried it with not-so-great results. There probably are much better forums for advice on that.

Two things:

(1) The "Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly)" support article has steps for finding crash report IDs locally on disk when Firefox will not run. Do those steps work?

(2) In case the installation of Firefox itself is corrupted, could you try this:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 40.0.3 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Does that flush it?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozillacrashreporter Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Note: You may have to enable Show Hidden Folders / Files. Enter this in the address bar;

Windows: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win 7/Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win XP/2000: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted

Mac OS: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Crash Reports/submitted Linux: /home/<username>/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted

Copy the last 5-7 Recent File Names in the folder. Post the information in the reply box below.
