Can't get messages from server, just hangs
Open Thunderbird and you see the message at the bottom that says "account@isp.com" Connected to pop.isp.com..." It sits like this for about 2 minutes then the line at the bottom disappears, but no email have been loaded. Press "GetMessages" button and nothing at all happens.
The error console has the following key messages every time:
Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/chrome.manifest'. Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/extensions/%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D/chrome.manifest'. . . It was working just fine until 38.5.1 loaded. Now I have gone back to 38.3.0 and 38.5.0 (both of which happily worked before) but they no longer work either.
Yes, I looked at and tried all the articles described under "Can't get messages" topics I could find in the forum.
Help!!!!
Thanks for your time. I'm certain it's something I missed.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
- Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Thank you! Weird because I started Win7 in safe mode and everything worked. Added all the background tasks (Norton, MalwareBytes, etc.) with no problems, so re-booted normally and all is working.
I have no idea what really happened, but at least I now have a plan for the next time.
Thanks again.
The issue will have been Norton. They are going out of the anti virus business and into the white-listing business. So software update and Norton's blocks it from accessing the internet till it either get a manual override from you as the user or an update from Home allowing the new version.
It is just a shame they don't make this clear, instead of telling you everything is automatic. It would save millions of hours of frustration for their customers.
