at the bottom of the Thunderbird email window it says my email address and behind that it says; "Checking mail server capabilities"

It sits like that forever and never downloads any of my email. This happened suddenly a week ago and I had made no changes to the Thunderbird mail client....No clue!
I have since started using Mailbird, but would rather have Thunderbird working correctly again.

Chosen solution

Problem may be solved... I had to enter Fairpoint mails server settings in manually and it started working again...I think the setting changed when I reinstalled thunderbird and let it setup on its own.

We're good for now. Thanks for the replies!

My email is through Fairpoint.net, not sure if they are anywhere but in New England.

I followed the link provided by christ1 and deleted all my passwords that were saved , but it didn't prompt me for a new password after closing...it still just says, "Checking mail server capabilities" at the bottom of the window. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird a couple of times also, but when it reinstalls it already has my account settings which must be being stored somewhere in the computer, uninstalling doesn't really uninstall Thunderbird completely.
Email works fine with other email clients, but I liked the layout of Thunderbird.
What really gets me is that not too long ago I was asked for a donation for Thunderbird and gladly gave one....I have been having issues with it ever since..??

If you're not prompted for the password Thunderbird doesn't get to that point, e.g. cannot reach the server.

Uninstalling removes the application. However, Thunderbird separates the program installation and the profile data with all your settings and mail. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb

Therefore re-installing the application often is a complete waste of time.
