How do I get a link to open in a new tab?

I went to preferences >general> Tabs, and marked Open new windows in a new tab instead. I actually did it a few times, also closed and reopened Firefox. Still, a new tab opens, but the link opens not in the tab but in a new window. Very annoying! Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try a right click and Open In New Tab.

Yes that works. I appreciate your help and am happy to not have to deal with a bunch of new windows. I am still annoyed though at having to go that extra step each time. How do I ask Mozilla to fix the problem that wasn't a problem until recently?

If you have a three-button mouse, hover over the link and press the middle button.

I don't. I have an Apple trackpad. Any other solutions?
