A single click on the email message line (subject, correspondent, date) does not produce a message box / window showing the message. A double click will, however, result in showing a new tab or window.

I just finished editing the question and description, then tried one more time to resolve it and BINGO!, I found the answer. I must have inadvertently hit F8, which is the toggle for 'message pane', as I found out by looking under 'View' (then 'Layout', then 'Message Pane' = F8). Thanks anyway to anyone who might have attempted to resolve this problem. Perhaps my discovery will help someone else.
