Thank you all . The solution. We replaced the new key4.db and the accompanying folder logins.jasn folder with the old ones. A copy and paste. Back I am back to work!

Thank you. If I have a profile it is only one default profile. Within that folder I saw key4.db and the accompanying folder logins.jasn folder but after opening them I see they are encrypted. How do I proceed from there - or is there another way?

Make sure to keep backup copies of logins-backup.js and logins.js and key4.db.

Do you also have a logins-backup.json that you can possibly use instead of logins.json ?

Are there errors reported in the Browser Console if you set signon.debug = true on the about:config page ?

If you use the Time Machine or other backup then try to restore the logins.json and key4.db files from this backup.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).
