For years I've used my gmail account to store all my sent messages. To help organize things, I use a separate folder for each year. For example, I'm currently using <my gmail account>/Gmail/Email 2021/Sent Email 2021.

This has always worked well until now. Today my regular computer is in the shop, and I'm using an older iMac with macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) instead. I've updated Thunderbird to 91.1.1, but I was running into this problem before updating. (I believe the previous version was 71.x.)

Now, when I send an email TB leads me to believe it was sent: but this is not true; I've tried sending a test message from one of my accounts to another, and the message never shows up.

But the real trouble shows up when, after "Sending message ..." two error messages pop up. One in TB says:

"Save Message Your message was sent but a copy was not placed in your sent folder (Sent Email 2021) due to network or file access errors. You can retry or save the message locally to Local Folders/Sent Email 2021-<my google email address>."

This message has 3 buttons: "Save, Don't Save, and Retry"

Every time I send a message or press the Retry button I also get a second error message:

"Thunderbird Server imap.gmail.com has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there..."

I can't read the entire message (how can one see it?), but I believe the missing part reads: "was a network problem."

Furthermore, this latter message appears even if I don't try to send an email. If instead I just drag and drop a message to the Sent Email 2021 folder, the same message pops up and the message never moves.

I did try Tools > Account Settings > <select the gmail account> > Server Settings > Advanced... and reduced the Maximum number of server connections to cache from 5 to 2 (as I read somewhere on the Web), but this had no effect.

What do you suggest?

(Note: For some reason the system rendered this note with a sentence missing. I fixed the problem by slightly modifying the original text. -- Gnosos)
