Thunderbird retuns to top of tab if I leave

I often get very long emails that I need to read through and open these in a new tab.

When I do this, if I leave the tab half-way through reading and return, Thunderbird re-sets the position to be at the top of the tab, loosing my position.

This can be frustrating, is there a way to prevent it from doing this?

It's a long-standing annoyance. The only workaround I know is to open messages in a window, instead of a tab.
