I use a master password in Firefox to protect my site passwords and it works well. However, it seems I am always needing to enter that master password, even during a session in which Firefox has been running continuously. When does Firefox ask for the master password, in addition to the time when it has just encountered the first occasion in a run in which needs to fill in a log in?

For me, this has started happening a few moths ago, it could be with a new version of FF. It is happening since then on all my computers with different (old) profiles. It is not happening on the same computers with newer profiles. I have searched the net a lot and not many people have this problem.
