I never get asked to provide a master password to unlock the software security device like I do on my desktop before firefox mobile autofills a password for me. How does firefox on n900 protect my saved passwords?

Sorry, current versions of mobile Firefox (a.k.a. Fennec) are not able to encrypt saved passwords.

We are working on adding this feature to the next version of Fennec. For details, see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592772
