after upgrading from Ubuntu's upgrade manager about two or three months ago, the google toolbar buttons stopped appearing on the google toolbar in firefox (3.1.11 I think). The toolbar is there, but there are no buttons.

You may have an older version of the Google Toolbar installed, one that isn't compatible with Firefox 3.6.13. Try updating it.
