Since yesterday, when I click on a new tab, it doesn't open. Sometimes a new site I enter in the browser window will open up in the same tab I was in just before this - and sometimes a new tab will open.

There is an incompatibility between the Ask Toolbar (which you have installed) and Firefox 3.6.13. Disable it or un-install it until Ask fixes the incompatibility.
