Have downloaded FF 4.0 but when dragging it to applications it indicates that the existing 3.6.16 is a newer version?
I'm running Mac OSX 10.6.6 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 >> Duo. When I attempt to install FF4.0 in the applications I am given the message that a newer version (FF 3.6.16) is already installed - this doesn't make sense! I have then declined installation of FF4.0 - what should I be doing?

I don't get the exact message that you're seeing. You should be able to just click "Replace" so that new installation will install over the previous one.
If that doesn't work then you could always drag your Firefox 3.6 install to the trash and then drag the 4.0 installation to your applications folder.
This is because internally, Firefox 3.6.16 has a later file date than Firefox 4.0. You can safely overwrite 3.6.16 with 4.0.
As an alternative, from within Firefox, you can manually initiate the upgrade process to install 4.0. See the instructions in this article: Update Firefox to the latest release.
