Everytime I close Firefox, "Remember passwords option gets unchecked"
I recently noticed that Firefox is NOT remembering my passwords. When I go to Options->Security-> and check "Remember Passwords," the options stays checked ONLY FOR THAT SESSION. When I close Firefox, and then reopen it, the check box is always "unchecked."
Chosen solution
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

OK, I've pretty much tried all the suggested cures. 1. I have scanned the system for malware and remove the STARTNOW toolbar, which I have no idea how it got there. I let the SAS (SuperAntiSpy) software scan and remove it, and, UNINSTALLED it from Control Panel. 2. I have deleted the prefs.js file quite a number of times and still no luck. 3. I looked at the file with Notepad to see if I could edit it, but there were no discernible remarks there that appear to be related to "Remembering Passwords for sites," unless I don't know what the entry might look like. 4. I have checked the box for "Remembering Passwords," immediately shut down Firefox, right-clicked on the prefs.js, went to Properties and checked Read-Only to try and lock it. 5. There is no "Users.js" file to be found and edit/modify. 6. Currently I am running Microsoft's Malignant Software Removal program but the scan has already passed drive C: (currently on drive F.) and so far there is no Malignant Software on my computer. 7. The SAS also took out some tracking cookies.
So, what's, if anything, is next. BTW, thanks for all the help I've been getting. HLippe
Remember passwords is this line in prefs.js if it is disabled (prefs.js only stores prefs that aren't the default).
- user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false);
Did you try Save mode?
- Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
That line, "* user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false);" doesn't exist in my prefs.js, and there is no "users.js."
Can I add that line," * user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false); to the pref.js, but change "false" to "true?"
Can I create a Users.Js?
Modified
If that line is missing then that means that the pref has the default "true" value and in that case the box should be checked on the next start.
You did try Save mode to see if an extension is changing that setting?
- Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
OK, I think I found the culprit. I'm going to wait a few days before I declare the problem as SOLVED. I put Firefox in SAFE MODE and disabled ALL Plugins and Extensions. I then enabled each Plugin and Extension, one-by-one until I restarted and saw that the "Save Passwords" box was unchecked. For future reference, that happened with the:
XFinity Constant Guard Protection Suite (1.0), extension. I enabled & disabled that one twice to make sure.
Now I want to see if Firefox continues correctly for a few days.
Thank you for all your help and bearing with me. I'm sure it was as frustration for you as it was for me.
UPDATE, OK, the passwords are being saved, HOWEVER, other choices are not being saved like, "[ ] Check to see if Firefox is the default browser," and several others.
ALSO, I'm now getting a PopUp from Firefox, "Would you like to help Firefox .....? [YES] [NO] [X]. I've checked all three, and I still get the popup.
Should I repeat the recommended procedure and see which extension, or plug-in might be unchecking choices in Preferences?
