Hotmail will not configure

Hotmail account working fine; however, all of a sudden is states "Configuration can not be verified - is the username or password wrong?". The sync works on Iphone and Ipad so I know it works. I have tried to uninstall/delete from Thunderbird and then reinstall, but error message continues and the account will not add. I checked with hotmail settings online when I logged in and all the configurations look correct. I have also made sure 2-step verification is not turned on. Other ideas of things I am missing?
