I am unable to get out of safe mode. I've turned off my computer & rebooted but it remains in safe mode.

After going into safe mode I am unable to get out of it. Your FAQ's state to restart Firefox or, if that fails, turn off the computer and reboot. I have now done that, several times, and I still can't get out of safe mode. I'm running windows 7.

Do you get the Safe mode start window if you start Firefox?

No, it goes to my home page with nothing loaded but the igoogle search box on the screen and my color theme on top of the screen. All the menu bars are also available on top of the screen. If I go to the igoogle settings, I can see all my "gadgets" listed, but they aren't loading.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.

You can try to decrease the value of the pref network.http.max-connections from 255 to a more modest setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.
