I just installed it on a new computer less than a month ago, so I don't think it's a memory problem. I used Thunderbird on my last computer and never had a problem. Sometimes after the "not responding" message, the screen will go blank and then I have to wait even to close and restart.

It seems to have gone away. When both windows and Thunderbird were in safe mode, Thunderbird performed okay, so I disabled add-ons in Thunderbird and rebooted. So far, so good. Thank you!

So I tried your previous suggestion and it seemed to work for a minute. But then it came back. So I looked around online a little bit and read that McAfee (trial version came installed with Windows) could be the problem, as it doubles up the SPAM protection that is already built in to Thunderbird. I went in and turned off the email setting on McAfee and the problem has been solved ever since. Thanks!
