Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window.

Since I was getting abovementioned error, I have uninstalled previous version of thunderbird and installed version 38. Still i am not able to start thunderbird. First error is Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window. After closing receiving following error Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window.

Have you looked for and removed a lock file?
