I can successfully update those add-ons, and get them to work after restarting firefox. However, every time after I reboot my system, those add-ons return to their old states - incompatible

This can be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.

Cor-el, thanks for your help. The add-ons work after I restart firefox, but fail again when I reboot my system. I deleted the files you listed above except (xtensions.rdf, extensions.cache), since i can't find them in my firefox profile folder.

The other files might be there as leftover files from a previous Firefox 3 installation. Firefox 4 only uses extensions.sqlite and extensions.ini.

Did deleting the files help to solve your problem?

If not then you may have security or cleanup software that corrupts the file(s).

Cor-el, I tried the methods in the link you provided (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved)

But these 5 add-ons always become incompatible with firefox 5 after I reboot my system. They can be updated, and used after restarting firefox, but become incompatible again after I reboot my system

The Add-ons that do not have a Remove button are installed globally by another program and can't be removed or updated from inside Firefox.

The others are installed via the Firefox Extensions Manager.

Read It Later 2.1.1 has a maxVersion: 4.0b9pre in the file install.rdf, but should install after a compatibility check on the update server. That check gives <em:minVersion>3.5</em:minVersion> <em:maxVersion>6.*</em:maxVersion> , so it should work in Firefox 5.

Did you ever make changes to prefs to force an extension installation?

If Firefox isn't able to do a compatibility update then you can't install extensions that fail because of the maxVersion in the install.rdf being wrong and that need such a check to install.
