ff won't open ANY pages

more options

I'm using windows xp and ff has suddenly started not opening ANY web pages AT ALL. it's as if i had no internet connection, but i do i checked and explorer and chrome both can access the web. the only firewall i have is the xp one and anti virus is MSE. ff worked fine in the morning but by the afternoon would not open any pages at_all so i un-installed it and re-installed it and it still won't work.

so it's a sad goodbye to ff form me and hello chrome

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

You can try to reset (power off/on) the router.

it's not the router because IE and chrome work fine.

the only firewall is the XP one and the antivirus is MSE and that has never interfered with firefox before. it worked fine in the morning a and by afternoon, zilch.

>remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet ". i understand nothing a but rules-don't know what they are. what are permissions? it looks like I will have to join the ever increasing band of those who are switching to chrome.

ff works fine in this laptop(now) but won't open a damn thing on the desktop PC, even after i un-installed ff and re-installed it. like more and more people i am getting increasingly fed up with ff. it's like a capricious woman, so to hell with it since mozilla clearly don't care about the users. no wonder more and more people are switching to chrome. that bloody mozilla-zine forum is too damned fussy to and whoever runs it can't be contacted, so it's goodbye ff.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
