lightning-3.3-sm+tb-linux.xpi doesn't install in Thunderbird 31, it tries to send an email instead

I have Thuderbird 31 on Ubuntu 14.04. I'm trying to install Lightning and the Add-ons Manager indicates that Lightning 3.3 is the proper version. If I set it to be opened by Thunderbird, the download results in Thunderbird trying to send an email with Lightning-3.3-sm+tb-linux.xpi as an attachment. If I save the download to a directory on my system and execute it, the same attempt to send an email occurs.

How do I successfully install Lightning on my Thunderbird?
